The structure of the ITA reflects the recommendations provided by a dedicated ITA Steering Group established in 2016 by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and composed of representatives from Governments, National Anti-Doping Organisations (NADOs) and the Sport Movement.
These recommendations were thoroughly reviewed and approved in May 2017 by WADA’s Foundation Board which is composed equally by Public Authorities covering the 5 continents and the Sport Movement.

ITA Board members are appointed for a maximum of four terms of two years. The ITA Board is mainly competent to propose amendments to the ITA Statutes, to appoint and remove the ITA Director General as well as the external financial auditors. The ITA Board is required to safeguard the independence of the ITA, in particular its operational independence and transparency. In this regard, the ITA Board delegates to the ITA Director General the responsibility of the actual and operational running and management of the ITA, the conduct of all its activities and the actual administration of its assets.

The ITA is home to an international staff of over 80 anti-doping experts who combine an extensive array of expertise for clean sport. The ITA staff is supported by more than 50 world-renowned consultants and experts in the field of anti-doping.
The members of our testing team bring hands-on knowledge from their former experiences as Doping Control Officers, NADO staff and high-level athletes with them. The majority of the ITA’s science & medical staff have acquired a PhD degree in their field of work (life sciences, mathematics, forensics, pharmaceutics etc.). Our legal team consists of lawyers with extensive previous experience or thorough in-house training in the highly specialised field of sports law. These teams are supported and complemented by skilled professionals in the fields of education, finance, communication, quality assurance, IT and project planning. The ITA is led by the ITA Director General and a Management Team, which we present to you here briefly.

These diverse groups also help us to foster exchange within the anti-doping community and share their perspectives with us, so we can, on one hand, create tailored solutions when needed and, on the other hand, respond to the needs of athletes worldwide.
The ITA is proud to work with some of the world’s leading experts in the field of anti-doping education. The Education Expert Group is composed of five members who represent five continents and have a wealth of combined experience in anti-doping and safe sport.
The Expert Group acts as an external advisory body to the ITA, providing important insight on how to build and deliver effective and comprehensive anti-doping education programs.

The Rio 2016 Re-Analysis Expert Group, consisting of laboratory and sports experts from national anti-doping organisations and international federations, was established and consulted to support the definition of the strategy for the re-analysis of samples from the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. This expert group reviews the current analytical capabilities and compares them with the original analysis situation in 2016.

The ITA Tokyo 2020 pre-Games Expert Group is responsible for reviewing available anti-doping information on athletes who are likely to compete in the Games and issues testing recommendations to ensure that effective testing is conducted globally through a coordinated effort. Leading the Pre-Games Expert Group and serving as its secretariat, the ITA is intensely collaborating with the other expert group members – five of whom are International Federation delegates appointed in consultation with the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF), and five are National Anti-Doping Organisation delegates, appointed in consultation with the Institute of National Anti-Doping Organisations (iNADO). Together, they form a diverse and independent body spanning across five continents and representing large, medium and small federations with expert knowledge on individual and team sports.

The role of the ITA’s Health & Clinical Expert Advisory Group is to advise the ITA on issues related to drugs, pharmacology, clinical medicine, nutrition, health, safeguarding and wellbeing, in the context of the operational implementation of global anti-doping programs.
The ITA Health & Clinical Advisory Group plays a role in advancing the International Testing Agency’s mission of upholding a level playing field through the delivery of robust anti-doping programs, while at the same time protecting and safeguarding athlete health by promoting clean sport.

In 2020, the ITA has developed an International Doping Control Officer (IDCO) Training & Certification Program to ensure harmonised and quality testing around the globe. To complement this initiative, the ITA has decided to rally internationally-recognised experts in the field of testing and sample collection to constantly raise the existing standards and expertise as well as to find the best solutions to issues that arise from time to time during the sample collection process. Promoting consistency and quality in the training of international doping control officers will help protect athletes and offer them increased confidence in the global anti-doping system.
