The ITA confirms that Rustam Djangabaev has been suspended for an eight-year period after testing positive for ostarine metabolites (classified under S.1.2 “Other Anabolic Agents” as per the World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List). Ostarine is a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) commonly used by athletes due to its muscle-building and performance-enhancing effects. The positive sample was collected by the ITA as part of an out-of-competition control on 22 February 2024.
On 11 March 2024, when informed of the adverse analytical finding, the athlete was provisionally suspended with immediate effect.¹
On 11 April 2024, following the athlete’s request to lift the provisional suspension, the Court of Arbitration for Sport Anti-Doping Division (CAS ADD) confirmed that the provisional suspension was maintained.
Following the results management process, the ITA subsequently issued a decision ² sanctioning Rustam Djangabaev with an eight-year period of ineligibility, from 11 March 2024 until 10 March 2032, and the disqualification of competitive results from 22 February 2024 until 11 March 2024.
The decision is subject to appeal before the appeal division of CAS in accordance with Article 13.2.3 of the IWF ADR.
This is the athlete’s second anti-doping rule violation (ADRV). He was previously sanctioned by the ITA, on behalf of the IWF, with a four-year period of ineligibility, from 24 February 2019 to 23 February 2023, for the presence of Human Growth Hormone in his sample collected on 24 February 2019, as well as sample substitution committed on 30 May 2018.³
Given that more than three athletes ⁴ from the Uzbekistan Weightlifting Federation have committed ADRVs within a 12-month period, this has triggered Article 12.3 ⁵ of the IWF Anti-Doping Rules. As a result, the matter will be referred to IWF’s Independent Member Federation Sanctioning Panel (IMFSP) to impose appropriate consequences.
