The ITA confirms that baseball player Angel Eduardo Villegas Rodríguez has been sanctioned with a 4-year period of ineligibility for an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV) under article 2.1 and article 2.2 of the WBSC anti-doping rules (WBSC ADR).
The player tested positive for the prohibited substance boldenone following an in-competition doping control on 14 September 2024 during the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup Shaoxing 2024.
Boldenone is prohibited under the WADA Prohibited List in the category S1.1 Anabolic Androgenic Steroids. It is prohibited at all times (in- and out-of-competition) and is classified as a non-specified substance . Boldenone is a bulking agent which stimulates muscle growth and assists the recovery of the athlete after strenuous effort
On 21 November 2024, when notified about the case, the player was provisionally suspended with immediate effect.
The player did not challenge his ADRV. Pursuant to Article 8.3.3 of the WBSC ADR, the ITA issued a sanctioning decision imposing the applicable consequences, namely a period of ineligibility of four years from 21 November 2024 until 20 November 2028 and disqualification of the player’s individual results from 14 September 2024 onwards.
The decision is subject to appeal before the appeal division of CAS in accordance with Article 13.2.3 of the WBSC ADR.
The ITA will not comment further on this case.
