On 26 February 2025, the ITA, on behalf of International Ski Mountaineering Federation (ISMF), notified the athlete that a sample collected from him on 28 January 2025 by the ITA during an out-of-competition anti-doping control had returned an adverse analytical finding¹ for clostebol metabolite. a non-specified prohibited substance under the Prohibited List of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Clostebol is prohibited under the WADA Prohibited List as S1. Anabolic Agents. It is banned at all times (in- and out-of-competition) and classified as a non-specified substance. Clostebol may enhance sports performance by promoting muscle growth, strength, and recovery through its anabolic properties.
When notified of the case, the athlete was provisionally suspended with immediate effect.
Following the results management process conducted by the ITA, the athlete was sanctioned with a four-year period of ineligibility and the disqualification of all his results obtained from 28 January 2025.
Following the appeal filed by the athlete against the ITA decision, on 11 September 2026, the CAS panel confirmed that Enrico Pellegrini had committed an ADRV by taking the prohibited substance clostebol and maintained the disqualification of all results obtained from 28 January 2025.
However, the CAS also found that the athlete did not act intentionally and that he bore no significant fault or negligence. Consequently, the CAS decided to reduce the period of ineligibility to 20 months, running from 26 February 2025 to 25 October 2026.
The ITA will not comment further on this case.
